How To Know If You Are An Expert

January 21, 2021 by ekraebber

Does the thought of speaking in public make you break out into hives?⠀

I honestly never realized how many people have a true fear of public speaking until more recently in my career. Im talking fear inducing paralysis if the possibility of speaking to a crowd comes up.

Maybe I am in the minority because I truly enjoy speaking about the work I do and sharing how I do it with others.

There is an energy shift that takes place when I’m sharing from a stage, the front of a room, or behind the zoom camera or this microphone. Every time is a new opportunity to share my experiences. ⠀

I’m confident in my message every time because I always share about something I am an expert on: my way. ⠀

Im the only one qualified to talk about me. To share my experiences and my unique ways of navigating this journey I am on.

I didn’t always understand that I am, in fact, an expert. There was a time when I  would have never labeled myself as an industry leader or expert. It felt like too much ego, too self-absorbed. I also realized that I wasn’t confident in my methods or processes.

I want to share three core criteria that industry leaders all have in common. Let’s break down each one and see if you identify with one or all three of these criteria I want you to use to evaluate if you can and should call yourself an industry leader.

#1: You are asked for your opinion.

Think about this one from a professional perspective. Do your co-workers, employees, or supervisors seek out your opinion. How often?

If you feel comfortable engaging when asked to give your insights or opinions, its because you are an expert.

How about when a mom friend sends you a quick text to ask your opinion on the best infant sleep sacks or the best places to shop in town for your teen daughter?

You are not being asked out of obligation. The people who are asking value your opinion because they see you as a trusted resource. A leader and an expert.

#2: You mentor others

Mentoring relationships do not have to be formal contracts to exist. They can be as formal or informal as you like. If you aren’t sure on this one, you might think that you are always the mentee and never the mentor.

Have you ever been asked for guidance or advice by someone in your industry or how about another woman from outside aspiring to do the work you are doing? This is a little different from asking an opinion. I’m talking about sharing your action steps on something like a task or project.

When you share your personal experiences in the form of advice or training, that is mentoring.

#3. You are ten percent ahead of someone else.

That’s it. Just ten percent. A few steps above on the career ladder or another season more in business. Or a few more years into a marriage or motherhood.

There is no set achievement or milestone to reach to be crowned an expert.

It’s ok to believe you are an expert at any point along your journey because you can’t see the finish line.

You are the expert on your business journey and what you provide. ⠀You are the expert on your motherhood journey in the same way.

Time to own the fact that yes you indeed are an expert. An industry leader with knowledge, skills, and experiences to share.

Why should you want to be considered an expert or leader?

It all comes back to confidence.

Confidence opens doors like public speaking opportunities which can then help you meet new people and turn those people into customers.

Doors like a bigger project at work which leads to a promotion or special recognition.

Or even just the simple belief that you are doing a great job raising your children and managing your homefront. Confidence that you are doing it right even when it feels overwhelming.

It might seem like a little thing but there is power in understanding this and more importantly, in believing it. Believe that you are ten percent ahead of someone else and that there are women working to be where you are in business and in motherhood.

I get asked about the art in my fitting rooms a lo I get asked about the art in my fitting rooms a lot.

I love how these two spaces turned out.

Yes, I worked with a designer on the concept but I didn’t want the finished product to break the bank.

I knew I wanted some inspirational and unique pieces. In the end, I used my own graphic design expertise to put the ideas into my brand colors.

I sent the designs to my local printer and had them printed onto foamcore boards. The prints are thick but very lightweight so hanging with simple 3M command strips was simple.

At least once a week I get asked if the prints are for sale so maybe I should consider it!

This is what back to school prep looks like. Aug This is what back to school prep looks like.

August has always been my busiest month of the year and while I have changed careers, I don’t expect that to change.

Back to school means back to dance. I’m working to be the best solution in town for parents and dancers this season.

How am I doing it?
⭐️Ensuring the store is fully stocked
⭐️Connecting with dance studios to share about my store with their students in their communications
⭐️Setting up pop up shops at open houses and fall events
⭐️Bundling items together to make shopping easy

My girls have helped with unboxing, pricing, cleaning, dressing mannequins and more this week. I’m taking advance of the extra hands before they go back to school next week 🤣

Back to school time is still stressful but in similar but different ways this year. Know what I mean?

Anyone else feel like their summer schedule was WA Anyone else feel like their summer schedule was WAY busier than usual?

We’ve had softball on top of softball travel on top of dance practices on top of work trips and more. The color coded google calendar is my lifeline.

One more week to survive and then we breathe a bit. Softball wraps for the season and one goes to sleep away camp for the week. Mom and dad exhale.

And then we start it all over again…

Time to play catch up! Feels a little like I’ve Time to play catch up!

Feels a little like I’ve been living in a whirlwind these past several weeks.

As a family, we are adjusting to life as local business owners. It’s a big change and a bit hard to sort though in the midst of all the girls’ activities. Like many of our friends with kids this age, we feel like we are just running from one thing to the next.

Always feels good to slow down for a minute and review the camera roll. Big memories have been made in the last month.

Kids wrapped the school year and Ally received 2 big 6th grade awards.

Travel softball is non-stop. Hadley has always been very naturally talented but she’s learned a lot off the field. She makes us proud to watch her, even when it means super early mornings and lots of car travel.

Garth Books came to B’ham and put on a show. I don’t love concerts but he was on my short list of must-see shows. It did not disappoint.

Last weekend I got to celebrate my sweet niece turning 1. Being there in person was really important to me and we made it work.

That’s a quick update on life here through the camera roll. Life happens even if we don’t post about it on social.

What’s life serving up for you lately? Drop a comment with some details about a favorite photo on your phones camera roll from the last few weeks.

The ribbon has been cut ✂️ Leaving my job was The ribbon has been cut ✂️

Leaving my job was scary. But hosting the grand opening of my retail store less than 6 months later was nothing short of incredible.

This isn’t a stopping point. It’s a milestone. One that I had so much fun celebrating with community members, family, friends, and friends who have become family.

Hosting a grand opening event led to a 200% increase in social following and nearly 1000 new eyeballs on my google business profile in the first 48 hours.

I’m getting my systems and tracking methods in place now to capitalize on the excitement and local traffic. If you need me, I’ll be making some new spreadsheets 🤣

Changing careers means change for the whole family Changing careers means change for the whole family.

Everyone has been involved with the new adventure of opening a retail dancewear store. From opening boxes to hanging up leotards to window washing, they are doing it all.

I’m so grateful for their support and the girls have been so interested in every step of the way.

Even when it’s meant multiple dinners on the store floor from the pizza place next door.

This change to a family business has been more than I could have hoped for 👨‍👩‍👧‍👧

The welcoming committee 👯‍♀️ Saturday I The welcoming committee 👯‍♀️

Saturday I unboxed, assembled and dressed the 5 mannequins that are part of my store window display. It wasn’t difficult by any means but I did learn the hard way that you have to dress as you build.

It’s a fun add but I’m also a bit creeped out by these faceless characters that I will now be spending a lot of time with every day.

I want to have a contest for my customers to name them. (Hello, creative lead generator 😉)My husband says that’s weird. What do you think?
